Alessio Romagnoli is set to sign a new AC Milan contract despite interest from Barcelona and Lazio

AC Milan are set to receive a major boost with the news that club captain Alessio Romagnoli is set to sign a new contract at the San Siro.

The 25-year-old has been a reliable figure in Milan’s defense for the past five years, making close to 200 appearances in all competitions since joining from Serie A rivals Roma.

Romagnoli’s impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, though, with reports back in April suggesting Lazio – who have mounted a surprise title challenge this season – and La Liga giants Barcelona this summer. I will fight to sign him.

But Calciomercato have revealed that despite ‘interest’ from Lazio and a number of Spanish clubs, Romagnoli is keen to sign a new contract at Milan – and remain at the club, captaining back to Serie A.

Romagnoli’s form has been a rare bright spark for Milan in what is arguably one of the club’s worst divisions in recent history. The seven-time Champions League winners have failed to qualify for the prestigious competition since 2013 and have not challenged for the Serie A title since 2012.

Despite high expectations in the current season, Milan have struggled throughout the year and find themselves in seventh place, just two points ahead of tenth-placed Bologna – holding onto the final Europa League qualification spot.

Big names such as Soso and Andre Silva have been sent out on loan amid the club’s poor form, but Milan are keen to pledge their future to Romagnoli.

With his current contract running until summer 2022, there is no immediate need to complete the deal just yet. But Milan can rest easy, at least, knowing their club captain is ready for his future.

Barring an unexpected twist in the near future, the deal is likely to be completed by the end of the current calendar year – unless one of the aforementioned parties comes under pressure with a bid.
