Atletico Madrid duo Diego Costa and Santiago Arias have tested positive for Covid-19

Atletico Madrid have confirmed that striker Diego Costa and defender Santiago Arias have both tested positive for Covid-19.

The La Liga side added that both players are asymptomatic and have self-quarantined.

“The first team participated, except for those internationals who are concentrated with their respective teams and who will be included in the group discipline in line with commitments to their countries.

“Neither the players Diego Costa nor Santiago Arias, who took a PCR test on their own while on holiday outside Madrid, tested positive. Both cases are asymptomatic, in quarantine and the relevant health authorities and law Complying with league protocol.

A number of high-profile athletes have tested positive for CoVID-19 in recent weeks.

Paul Pogba and Tanguy Ndombele both withdrew from France’s squad for their upcoming Nations League games, while Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar has also tested positive along with two other undisclosed players from the Champions League finalists.

Wolves winger Adama Traore, who was included in Spain’s recent squad, was unable to join his international team-mates due to his positive results. He has taken a second test, but the result is yet to be revealed.

Atletico Madrid previously reported two confirmed cases of the coronavirus ahead of their Champions League quarter-final against RB Leipzig.

Los Rojiblancos are scheduled to begin their La Liga campaign at the end of September.
