RB Leipzig centre-back Josep Guardiola will not be rushed into a decision on his future, sources have confirmed. 90 minutes.
Guardiol almost joined Chelsea last summer, but a deal could not be agreed and the Croatian international signed a new contract with Leipzig in a sign of his value to the Bundesliga outfit.
He then enjoyed a stunning World Cup final, emerging as one of the most in-demand defenders in the world, and is expected by most of Europe’s top sides to make him a huge summer signing. The transfer may be scrambled.
Since their failure to land him last summer, Chelsea have signed France’s Benoit Badiachel along with Levi Colwell, currently on loan at Brighton, to return in the summer.
Whether or not Chelsea rekindle their interest remains to be seen but the battle to land Guardiol is fierce nonetheless, with Real Madrid putting themselves in a very favorable position.
90 Minutes reports that Luka Modric has spoken to Real officials about his compatriot and the veteran midfielder offered a glowing reference.
Real are believed to see Guardiol as an ideal option to bolster their central defensive options, particularly as a left-sided talent.
However, in the last six months there has been a significant increase in interest from England. Sources have confirmed to 90 Minutes that both Manchester City and Liverpool have sent scouts to keep regular updates on the defender, with both heavyweights making sure they stay in the loop.
The final decision will fall to Guardiol, but a move this summer looks increasingly likely as the club will also want to try and avoid paying the near £100m release clause that kicks in next year.
