Man Utd’s penalty move for PSV and Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo

Manchester United have begun working on a deal to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV in January.

Sources have indicated to 90 Minutes that United’s hierarchy have greenlit the decision to make a move for the Dutch international in line with manager Erik ten Hag’s wishes, with interest in the player who left ten Hag old last summer. Arrived at Trafford.

The 23-year-old scored nine goals and provided 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie games ahead of the World Cup, with Gakpo potentially worth more now than at the start of the season.

In Qatar, Gakpo scored in every group game as the Netherlands reached the quarter-finals – although the team lost on penalties to eventual winners Argentina. PSV know that his achievements over the past six months have seen his reputation and value rise.

United and The Hague have parted ways with Cristiano Ronaldo since the Premier League’s World Cup break, and the termination of the Portuguese’s contract – which came at no cost to United – has put a replacement on the books. has made Ten Hague has encouraged United to make their move for Gakpo, and they could now push ahead with a deal.

PSV have already accepted that Gakpo will likely leave the club in January, as long as his fee is met. They have told the player’s representatives that they would need a club-record £45m deal to part with the player.

Former United striker manager Ruud van Nistelrooy admitted earlier this week that his side were powerless to stop the January signing.

He told Votable International: “If I have a choice, I prefer. [Gakpo to leave in] Summer, but it can still happen. You know there comes a time when you can’t say no.”

Gakpo himself insists he will not be rushed into a deal, but a move to United is believed to have long been his target. Leeds and Southampton have also shown interest in the Premier League but are understood to be out of the race.

Despite United being in pole position, others have expressed an interest in Gakpo – with Newcastle United and Arsenal having been actively interested in the player for months. Even Real Madrid scouts have given a positive report about him.

Muttahida, however, is in the driving seat.
