Pep Guardiola describes the ‘failure’ of the Champions League as he tells the strange Julia Roberts – Man Utd story.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola went off on a Julia Roberts-inspired tangent when describing his and the club’s failure to win the Champions League.

The Citizens reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the sixth season in a row on Tuesday night after thrashing RB Leipzig 7-0 at the Etihad Stadium, winning 8-1 on aggregate in their last 16 tie.

Erling Haaland scored five goals on the night – for only the third time in the competition’s history – to break Man City’s record for goals in a single season.

The Champions League is the only major trophy Man City have competed for but not won under Guardiola.

Speaking to the media after the match, Guardiola insisted that if he wanted to help the club overcome their continental hump and lift the European Cup, he had already failed in his mission as the legendary actress Couldn’t get Roberts to come and see. They instead of their rivals Manchester United.

“I am a failure in the Champions League, if I win the Champions League three times in a row I will be a failure,” he began.

“I have three idols in my life. Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Julia Roberts. Those are my three idols.

“Julia Roberts came to Manchester years ago – not in the 90s when Sir Alex [Ferguson] They were winning titles and titles and titles. They came in a period where we were better than United, in those four or five years, right?

“And she went to see Man Utd. She didn’t come to see us. That’s why even if I win the Champions League it won’t compare to the fact that Julia Roberts came to Manchester and didn’t come to see us.

“Even if I win the Champions League, it won’t compare to this disappointment.”
