Premier League preview and predictions: Gameweek 7

With most sides six games into the Premier League, the division is starting to heat up.

The campaign has had some surprising starts, some that have smacked of fraud and others that have been downright rubbish. This is the English top flight, and can never be underestimated across the board.

Ahead of Gameweek seven, here’s the bottom of your full fixture list.

Two sides with almost identical records in the Premier League so far go head-to-head on Friday, as Wolves host Crystal Palace with both sides on ten points from their opening six matches.

A solid start to the campaign saw Wolves win over Sheffield United, but back-to-back defeats against Manchester City and West Ham sent the club back down to earth. They have since regrouped with back-to-back 1-0 victories against Fulham and Leeds and only denied Jacob Murphy’s late free-kick against Newcastle to make it three in a row.

The Eagles have had a mixed bag so far, losing heavily to Chelsea but securing a memorable win at Old Trafford as Roy Hodgson stuck to his usual counter-attacking style. A victory at Fulham on the road would have given them the confidence to repeat the feat on Friday, but it is unlikely.

After a comfortable win at Marseille on Tuesday, Manchester City head to Yorkshire sitting 13th in the table. Pep Guardiola’s side have played one game less, but their last two league fixtures on the road have ended 1-1 and anything less than three points will not be enough.

Their work is made easier by the rough shape of the blades. Sheffield United have scored just three goals in their six matches, picking up a single point from their home draw with Fulham.

With a fit and ready Kevin De Bruyne to contend with, their poor run looks set to continue.

Burnley v Chelsea

Burnley are one of only four teams to have won a league match so far this season, and they invite Chelsea to Turf Moor, sitting 18th in the table. A point was earned in a 0-0 draw at West Brom, while they have managed to find the back of the net just three times so far.

However, they have a game in hand for most teams, and a victory over Chelsea would see them out of the relegation zone, at least for a while. The Blues have struggled on the road this season – at least as far as the Premier League is concerned – with just two points from their last three away league games.

An emphatic 4-0 Champions League win in Russia has put an end to their travel sickness.

prediction: Burnley 1-2 Chelsea

Liverpool vs West Ham

This clash might not have been so cut and dry if West Ham hadn’t suffered a major blow with Mikel Antonio ruled out for the foreseeable future with a hamstring strain.

Without him, combined with Liverpool’s defensive crisis, it could (truly) be more of a clash, but that would require David Moyes to contend with that forward line. The Hammers are in good form with a win over Leicester followed by draws against City and Spurs, but the Reds are far better on home soil.

prediction: Liverpool 3-1 West Ham

Aston Villa vs Southampton

‘Aston Villa are going to win the league!’…..that’s what everyone was saying before they beat Leeds 3-0 at home in their latest outing. Indeed, a 7-2 thrashing of Liverpool and a 100% start to the season had everyone – no matter how tongue-in-cheek – making premature claims for the title. They were all put to bed by Marcelo Bielsa and co.

Regardless, they still have the best defensive record in the league and are third ahead of the weekend, but Southampton have started to click after recovering from two successive defeats at the start of the season. Che Adams and Danny Ings are forming a fine partnership at the top, and Villa are well on target.

Newcastle, reactionary scoundrels. It seems that whenever they have a bad loss, the reaction is positive. Whether it’s grabbing a point at Wolves or going to Spurs and drawing after a heavy defeat at home, they always seem to find some inner reserves.

It all points to them losing on Saturday.

Everton slipped to a deserved defeat against Saints – their first of the season – but Newcastle’s stagnant central midfield area should struggle to cope with the movement of Abdoulaye Doucourt and James Rodriguez. Carlo Ancelotti should have an answer from him.

A fixture that was once a source of excitement in the Arsenal camp has become an absolute terror over the past 14 years. Indeed, the Gunners have not tasted victory at Old Trafford in the Premier League since 2006.

Now is not a good time to face the Red Devils either, as they are in red-hot form both domestically and in Europe, with goals and performance levels rising across the team.

Arsenal, by contrast, will have to play Shkodran Mustafa on Sunday, which says it all. Also, they are yet to find their groove in the attacking sense so all pre-match indications are that it won’t be a good one for the visitors.

Jose Mourinho will not stand for what he saw in Belgium on Thursday. A weak and lifeless Spurs display saw his side lose 1-0 to Royal Antwerp, nothing more than acceptable for the visit to Brighton.

The Seagulls are unbeaten in their last five in all competitions, and their hopes of something remotely positive in north London will be further hampered by the impressive form of forward duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Tottenham need a response after their Europa League defeat, and they will get it.

prediction: Tottenham 5-1 Brighton

Fulham v West Brom

Fulham already have their second game of the season against fellow newly promoted sides, but will be hoping for a better result than the 4-3 defeat at Leeds. In a league that has been unpredictable so far, one of the few assumptions that has come true is that these sides will struggle at this stage.

Both are winless before Monday, although the visitors have fared marginally better, drawing three of their six matches.

The Cottagers are already looking to bounce back, but a home win against the Baggies could kick-start their season. They need a win somewhere to turn the tide. Both do, in fact.

prediction: Fulham 1-1 West Brom

It’s fun to see leads, isn’t it? Playing a brand of football that is pleasing to the eye but opens the door to goals at both ends, it gives Jamie Vardy the opportunity to excel.

He has returned from injury and is back in goals after putting Arsenal to the sword last time out, and how susceptible Leeds will be to Foxes’ breakaways could decide the outcome in the final game of Gameweek Seven.

Looking sixth against fourth has some goals.

prediction: Leeds 2-2 Leicester
