Sergio Ramos ‘agrees 1-year contract extension’ at Real Madrid

Real Madrid are understood to have agreed a one-year extension to defender Sergio Ramos’ contract, keeping him at the Santiago Bernabeu until at least 2022.

There have been several reports suggesting that the Spaniard, who will soon enter the final year of his current contract, is pushing for a long-term extension that would extend the 30-year-old’s one-year contract. It would be against club policy to offer a contract. .

Both sides have made no secret of their desire to do a deal, with Ramos previously speaking of his desire to retire in Madrid, and AS say the two sides have now reached an agreement and Ramos will sign a new one-year contract.

2022 is expected to be an important year for Real as the new and improved Bernabeu is unveiled, and Ramos wants to be part of that historic moment.

Rumors of a bumper offer from China are said to have led to a rift between Ramos and Real officials, and the centre-back could return to the club after failing to agree a new deal. But Ramos first insisted that any talk of a breakdown in the relationship is wrong.

“The relationship with the club is fantastic in every way,” he said back in February. “So there is no rush either way – mine or the club.

“I have never made additional demands, I understand the club’s policy with players of a certain age, if the club wants me to stay I will stay, no worries.

“It looks like they want to fuel a clash between the club and Ramos and it won’t happen.”

Real’s plan is to keep Ramos for a few more years as long as he remains an elite defender, and that will give them time to find a replacement. Éder Militão will get a chance to prove himself, but RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano has also been named as a possible candidate.

As we approach 2022, Ramos will have to make a decision about his future. It is accepted that it may be time for him to retire when that contract expires, while there have also been rumors of a possible move to Major League Soccer.

In the meantime, Ramos remains fit, healthy and hungry to win trophies, and he hopes to do so with Real.
